Villa Torrigiani: Enchanting Baroque Between History and Legend
Imagine walking down a long avenue flanked by majestic rows of cypress trees stretching nearly a kilometer, slowly leading you to a unique spectacle: the theatrical and imposing façade of Villa Torrigiani, a gem of Tuscan Baroque nestled in the heart of Capannori.
Its history dates back to the early 1500s, when the Buonvisi family purchased the estate from the Berti in 1536. Since then, the walls of this residence have guarded tales of love and intrigue, such as that of Marchesa Lucrezia Malpighi, bound by a forbidden passion to Massimigliano Arnolfini. Legend has it that right in front of the gates of Camigliano, Massimigliano was captured, accused of murdering Lucrezia’s husband, Marquis Lelio. Lucrezia, condemned to a convent, never abandoned her beloved garden, and even today, it is said that her spirit lingers among the flowers and fountains.
In the 17th century, Villa Torrigiani reached its zenith under Marquis Nicolao Santini, ambassador of the Republic of Lucca to the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV. Inspired by the grandeur of Versailles, he transformed the villa into a theatrical masterpiece, complete with refined gardens, flowering parterres, and large pools that reflect light like mirrors. Among its masterpieces is the Garden-Theater of Flora, a marvel filled with grottos, statues, and still-functioning water features. The Grotto of the Winds, with its dome from which a sparkling rain flows, stands as an extraordinary example of Baroque architecture: at its center reigns Flora, queen of the garden, who seems to breathe life and magic into every corner of the park.
The villa’s interior also reflects the splendor of the era. The frescoes by quadraturist Pietro Scorzini guide visitors through a journey among the Seasons, ancient myths, and portraits of emperors, framed by paintings from Vincenzo Dandini. The original furnishings still bear the mark of the Santini Marquises, while the villa’s rooms seem to tell the stories of its inhabitants, culminating in the union of the Santini and Torrigiani families, from whom the current owners descend.
The villa’s main façade is a masterpiece of theatricality and harmony, with its contrast of materials and colors, and statues crowning the three levels of the palace, giving it a triumphant air. The design is credited to architect Alfonso Torregiani, whom Marquis Nicolao met at the Bernini worksites in Rome.
But it is not just the villa that amazes: the surrounding park is a true feast for the senses. Alongside the Baroque magnificence, the 19th century introduced a romantic atmosphere, thanks to exotic and monumental plants such as majestic plane trees, American tulip trees, and ancient camellias that transform the garden into a dream of colors each spring.
Villa Torrigiani is not just a historic residence, but a journey through centuries of art, passion, and mystery. Visiting it, you will discover not only the elegance of the Baroque but also the timeless allure of its legends. Prepare to be enchanted.
