La Vinaria Vintage Cycling Event
La Vinaria vintage cycling event was born in 2016 from the idea of a group of cycling enthusiasts belonging to the G.S. Cicli Carube. Immediately supported by the mayors of Montecarlo, Porcari, and Capannori, La Vinaria takes its name from “La Via Vinaria,” a wine event featuring farm visits for wine tasting.
La Vinaria is not a competitive race but designed for those who want to combine passion, fun, nature, and landscape, with the goal of cycling together and enjoying good food. It is open to everyone, with participation allowed only on road bikes manufactured before 1987, equipped with toe clips and straps, external brake cables on the handlebars, and gear levers on the down tube; the attire must, of course, be appropriate for the event.
There are two routes:
-
“The Divine”, a 43 km route for cyclists who want to enjoy beautiful landscapes and excellent refreshment stops along the way.
-
“The Intrepid”, a 78 km route for the adventurous who are not afraid of climbs and want to witness breathtaking views of the Capannori Apennine range and visit places like the “Witches’ Oak,” where legend has it Pinocchio was once hanged.
Both routes start and finish at the historic Marlia Market, with many excellent refreshment points along the way.
One of the many stops is at the park of the 16th-century villa, Villa La Badiola, the ancient residence of the Arnolfini family, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, located just below the “Specola,” an astronomical observatory commissioned by Paolina Bonaparte.
La Vinaria is organized by G.S. Cicli Carube with the patronage of the municipalities of Capannori, Porcari, Lucca, and the Opera delle Mura of Lucca — as the routes, besides passing through vineyards, also cross the monumental and historic Walls of Lucca.
To borrow a phrase from television: “At La Vinaria, we take off our watches because instead of watching the time… we enjoy it.”
